Super commissaire Mike Pinkoski has offered to give us a presentation/discussion on some track rules and a review of incidents he has collected on video. He will spend a bit of time offering some suggestions on how both coaches and athletes can make their case effectively after an incident.
This is also an opportunity to discuss the upcoming 2015 AVA Track Season, the calendar, and why Track League! is the greatest racing every Thursday night.
Draft Agenda:
- Preview of Season - Learn to ride options - midweek stuff - track league schedule - weekend races
<pizza break>
- Insights from commissaires - interacting effectively with commissaires - review incidents (what is seen from the infield vs. on the track) - coaches roles
Looking forward to a great 2015 Track Season! -Jeff

A letter to you from Clive Burke . . .
Hi to all Juventus members,
After overcoming a difficult first 6 months last year I took part in the Kids for Cancer, Le Tour of Hope ride 2014. To celebrate my continued good health I have decided to take part in the ride again this year one more time. The ride raises money for children with cancer and their families and with that in mind I would be very grateful if you would support me in this year’s challenge.
This year’s ride sees us riding 800km with 13 summits from Summerland BC to Edmonton with overnight stops in Osoyoos, Grand Forks, Castlegar, Creston, Blairmore, Longview and Cochrane. I will endeavour to write a daily report to let everyone know how the ride is going. It looks like we will have more riders this year so hopefully we will raise lots of money to help these unfortunate children and their families.
I hope to see you in the near future, thank you.
Ride safe,
Clive Burke

Stefan Ritter enjoys last session before Junior CX Championships
Stefan Ritter, an up and coming Juventus junior, spent Sunday riding through the trails of Edmonton's river valley with his coach (Tracy Shearer) and teammates. He was taking care of his final preparation for the Junior World Cyclocross Championships. Stefan will test himself on Jan. 25 in Hoogerheide, Netherlands with a UCI Junior CX race, and from there will move onto Tabor, Czech Republic for the Junior World CX Championships on Jan. 31. TP at first World Cup for Kinley Gibson
Juventus elite woman Kinley Gibson recently road for Canada on the Women's Team Pursuit Development team at Canada's UCI 1.1 Milton Challenge at the new Mattamy (pronounced Matt Amy) Velodrome in Ontario. The team performed well and trained together for the week leading to the third World Cup in Cali, Colombia.
The team of riders included Kinley, Annie Foreman-Mackie, Ariane Bonhomme, and Catherine Dessureault - all new to the World Cup scene. Learning can be a big factor in inaugural performances and the girls will be able to take advantage of this. Wind, pacing, and adrenaline conspired to a ride below their potential. Although disappointed, Kinley and her team returned to Canada with energized motivation and a commitment to future success.

Juventus Club Awards 2014 was followed by dinner prepared by Chianti's and delivered by Lance. It was delicious. The time to relax, reflect and socialize with fellow club members was enjoyed by all - and the clubhouse was returned to training state by 5 pm. As always, well done Juventus!
City of Edmonton celebrates success of 3 Juves!
On Tuesday night, Edmonton City Hall looked more like the venue for a Hollywood awards gala. Large deep blue bubble stars decorated the background stairs at the event held to recognize the contributions of Edmontonians to arts and culture, community service, and sports. Peter Toth, Kinley Gibson and Evan Burtnik were recognized for their performances in Individual Cycling. Each has seen both national and international success. It was great to see them up on the stage and recognized among fellow elite athletes. Here are Peter, Kinley and Evan with City of Edmonton Mayor Don Iveson and Juventus Cycling Club President Gail Wozny.
After presentations, both award winners and guests were treated to a delicious array of appetizers and the very popular candy dessert bar. Now this is a fantastic thing - all sorts of darling little cupcakes, jelly beans, gumballs, licorice, peppermints and more. You use a cute little brown bag to select all your favourites! Here is a picture of our 3 Juventus winners before they got into the candy.
Evan Burtnik and Stefan Ritter with National Podiums!
U17 and U19 National Track Champions 2014 - Stefan Ritter and Evan Burtnik
WOW! Spectators were treated to many amazing race dynamics at the Junior and U17 Track Cycling Championships held this past weekend in Burnaby BC. Juventus junior Evan Burtnik really kept the crowd guessing with his antics in the group races and his lightning speed in the timed events. By Sunday night he had accumulated 2 national jerseys! (the kilo and individual pursuit), as well as a silver medal in the keirin. If you are wondering what happened in the omnium - well, a little snafu in the scratch (involving a wheel and such) saw Evan gifted with -40 points. Yes, that is a minus and a tough break for sure. Evan was exceptional in the following five omnium events, but . . . Safe to say that while Evan is thrilled with his performance at his first track nationals as a junior . . . "he will be back"!
Evan Burtnik - U19 National Track Champion 2014
Meanwhile, the other U17 men in Canada had the pleasure of racing Juventus phenom Stefan Ritter. He quickly figured out that the easiest way to the top of the podium was to be first . . . in the flying 200, in the 500 TT, and in all of his match sprints! Congratulations on 3 U17 National Championships! Stefan is still putting polishing touches on his group racing and settled for silver in the U17 omnium.
Stefan Ritter - U17 National Track Champion 2014
If you check the tweets from the Burnaby Velodrome, you will see M. Burtnik showing up frequently in all the junior men's bunch races. That is because Mason likes to race and likes to make it tough on everyone else. Congratulations on a solid omnium performance to Mason Burtnik. Like his brother, we will look forward to more of his fast racing style next year.
Left to Right Juventus cyclists Mason Burtnik, Stefan Ritter, Evan Burtnik, and Anna Talman along with Alberta Team member Gabby Traxler.
Our Juventus women also had superb results in Burnaby. Anna Talman raced against some of Canada's fastest junior women and was a solid contender in each of her omnium races. But . . . prior to that she joined a mixed province team for a team pursuit - and an unfortunate crash meant Anna would have to compete in the omnium with some face rash. Still, consistent and strong performances got her within two steps of the podium - which makes for some great motivation for 2015. Anna pulled off a PB in her individual pursuit and had a great team sprint with a mixed province team.
Our newest Juventus cyclist at nationals was Devaney Collier. Devaney raced in the hotly contended U17 women's category. You can imagine that with 18 competitors on the track, Devaney had to be a quick learner. She was! Together with PBs in all her timed events, Devaney placed 6th in the U17 omnium!
Congratulations on all these stellar performances!
Juventus Juniors off to Track Nationals!
A select group of Juventus juniors and cadets will make their way to Burnaby for the Canadian Junior Track Cycling Championships November 21 - 23. The event was originally scheduled for October at the new Pan Am Velodrome in Milton, Ontario, but construction delays forced a change of venue. No problem - because that means Juventus is stronger and even faster now!
You can look forward to substantial results from our team (many riding in Team Alberta kit).
Best of luck to Evan Burtnik, Stefan Ritter, Devaney Collier, Mason Burtnik, and Anna Talman!
Sidney McGill CX U17 Canadian Challenge Champion!
Juventus rising star Sidney McGill will be returning from Winnipeg as the 2014 U17 Female Cyclocross Champion. Racing against a very strong field, Sidney proved herself as a tough competitor, navigating the complicated course with agility and speed. Fellow teammates cheered as she crossed the line in first place at the very well run event. We await good intel about her sister Abbey's race. We bet it was also strong . . . stay tuned.
Juventus also competed well in other categories. Sean Germain (racing as part of Team Alberta) debuted as a U23, turning in a solid performance. Sean led the group in early laps, and against a large field barely missed the podium finishing in 4th.
Meanwhile, in the Junior (U19) category Stefan Ritter (racing as part of Team Alberta) proved himself with another great ride for 2014, finishing in 5th. Michael Verveda was not far behind with an 8th place finish.
Connor Wilson raced against amazing elite men's field.
The Master men 50+ race saw veteran Juventus cyclists Ken Germaine and Tracy Shearer challenge every lap. They finished in 8th and 12th respectively in a field 38 deep.
Congratulations to this group along with all of our other Juventus members competing in Winnipeg at the Canadian Cyclocross Championships.
