Ross Wilson Invitational a success!

Creative cycling minds were active Monday evening , as the Track Group worked through a series of exercises designed for optimum impact on neglected calves.  The Invitational honours club member and Olympic hopeful Ross Wilson.

The rock solid dedication of the track group to these muscles, each and every February 29th is a testament to its commitment to excellence. Dylan and Scott were extraordinary in brainstorming and  executing a bazaar variety of techniques to work the forlorn muscles of the lower leg.

Another busy Sunday morning at the clubhouse . . .

The sun has yet to peak above the track, yet the first computrainer riders have already arrived at the clubhouse.  The track group is close behind; and after tending espresso needs, they await the rogue training set that Scott manufactures in situ. Another CT group utilizes their time spots, and the sweat continues.  Meanwhile, Scott's workout for the roller crowd is only appreciated once it is finished.

Juventus Masters take titles!

Lorne and Gail were feted as they won the master c category titles with the Edmonton Masters in 2015.  Also represented at the annual awards was guest of honour Clive Burke who gave a touching and engaging talk about his many journeys and triumphs: to Canada, discovering romance, biking, surviving cancer and winning big in Europe last year.

Juventus squad adds flair!

On Saturday, the ABA had its Race Organizers Meeting.  Juventus was on scene contributing ideas and locking in dates.  Sounds like there will be a lot of road races on the calendar and the official details will be available soon.

Many thanks to Dan, Bill, Bruce, Lance, and John for representing our club!

Ice Ice Tracy! and snow . . .

Winter riding compliments junior training, and a quick regroup allows for an awesome selfie.  Coach Tracy is always up for the outdoors and you know it's fun with these smiling faces.

Computrainer sessions deemed overly fun.

The Juventus computrainers are in jeopardy, as they have recently been found to be "too much fun".   Serious cyclists prefer to sweat and grind out the miles bearing the classic steadfast grimace, yet Clive and Phil provide more evidence that the Juventus Clubhouse atmosphere makes computrainer work enjoyable.  We are currently evaluating this situation.

Track team rolls on Eggnog!

'Tis the season for snow, and that means the track group's Annual Eggnog Shot Rep Roller Session.  Here they are just getting started early Sunday morning . . .

2.jpg

Matt gives wise words to Aaron, who has mastered his rollers quickly - with a little help from a shiny blue ball. Meanwhile, Chris is unfazed by a broken limb (a different sporting pursuit of course).

60 of 120 complete, a small recovery - and this half of the room is still looking good . . . hey, where did Cam go?  And for that matter, where is a certain Mr. S. MacKenzie?

Eggnog Shot Set 2015 is in the belly and in the legs!!  Well done.  (Gail and Linda's shot glasses may appear smaller than actual size.)

Juniors target core strength!

Juniors are back from a break and Tracy wants to see every one of them strong and fast for 2016.  Juventus juniors will be working hard to develop core strength over the next few months.  It may not look like much right now, but little by little, and day by day their strength will build.  And with great core strength comes great responsibility . . . .

Juventus juniors always look so happy, and responsible!

Bruce sets workout theme for Masters!

The coach of our Masters program, Bruce Copeland, is always prepared for Tuesday and Thursday training rides with a challenging workout.

The workout often has a theme; particularly, it is often how either your body or mind will feel as you progress through 1.5 hours of riding.

Here is the Master's group anticipating a set of hill climbs at constant power and varying cadence.  This is not how they looked at the midway point, but did have some Beck and other tunes to push them over the top . . . phewff!

Evan Burtnik at World Cup II

Team Pursuit is an extremely technical event to race.  It's a given that a rider needs a strong endurance engine. Solid speed is another ingredient. After that, you'll need to be really smooth on the track - consistent, reliable and predictable - a good wheel. These are the bare essentials required to learn the art of Team Pursuit.

The NextGen Canadian Men have been working and learning together for over a year, and race after race improve on their World Cup results. At top speed and effort, the skill needed to time exchanges is critical and develops only with much practice.  World Cup II is on in Cambridge, New Zealand from Dec. 3 - 6, and Juventus and NextGen rider Evan Burtnik is there training and getting comfortable in the line up.  Currently he is one of the team's alternates, but look out for Evan to continue to improve and look to see him racing future World Cups . . .

The team continually practices and reviews its rides.  Here, with coach Ian Melvin, they critique a training performance.  Oh, and there's Evan's sweet Canadian team LOOK bike just hanging out on the left!

Evan keeps energy up and reps LG.  The Canadian track skin suit zips up the back, so its sometimes tricky to look completely put together. Working with the NextGen men, Evan always gives his best effort, continues to hone his skills, and will be ready when Ian includes him in the line up.  Stay tuned!

Juves receive City of Edmonton Performance Awards!

On Monday night, two young Juventus members each accepted a City of Edmonton Performance Award.

Sidney McGill, Stefan Ritter, and Evan Burtnik were part of a select group of Edmontonians recognized for their accomplishments on the 2015 national and international stage in sport, arts or culture.

Evan is currently off training in California with cycling Canada's NextGen men's team, and unfortunately had to miss out on the delicious treats included with this honour.

For a Sport Performance Award, nominees must have won a gold medal at a national event, or a gold, silver, or bronze medal at an international event with more than four countries participating.

The City of Edmonton does a wonderful job turning this event into a gala affair.  Here is Sidney with the Honourable Mayor Don Iveson after accepting her award.

We look forward to these and the rest of the Juventus team as they go forward into 2016!

2015 AGM and Awards Dinner enjoyed by all!

On Sunday November 15th, Juventus Cycling Club gathered for its AGM, and to celebrate accomplishments from the past year. Club president Gail Wozny chaired the AGM.

The directors of each Juventus program (Sprockids, LAMP, Junior, Track, and Master) summarized successes and learning for 2015, and also thoughts for future plans.  We learned from our treasurer that our club is managing finances well, and from our membership coordinator that youth continues to drive club growth.  The AGM concluded with a unanimous re election of the executive.

Gail ably transitioned into the role of witty Master (Ms) of Ceremonies for the annual Juventus Cycling Club Awards and dinner.  Please enjoy the following pictures of our winners and of good fun and good company.  And thank you to Chianti's Cafe and Restaurant for the lovely dinner!

3 Juves selected to NextGen!

The success of Juventus programming is showcased in Cycling Canada's new NextGen Program.

Evan Burtnik and Kinley Gibson will be part of the track program based out of Milton ON, while Sidney McGill will be part of cross country mountain development in Victoria BC.

In Kinley's case, she is one of six targeted track endurance women that will eventually start integrating into Canada's internationally performing National Team squad post Rio Games.

Evan joins the men's NextGen program which is in its second year. It is a full road and track endurance program aiming to improve on international competitiveness and success from 2015.

Sidney McGill will be part of the cross country mountain bike program based out of Victoria, BC.  This program currently includes other disciplines, but will transition to be an exclusive x-country mountain program by September 2016.

All 3 of these Juventus members are LAMP graduates. They all trained with Tracy as Juniors, (and also Ken in the case of Sidney), and with Jeff on the track in the case of Evan and Kinley: evidence that Juventus programming develops top level cyclists!
