Sunday, May 8, 2002 - Kid's race at The Alex Stieda Classic

Noon Kid’s Race

Children 12 and under are welcome to come do one to two laps around our closed course just before noon (11:45). Best to queue up at the start/finish line about 11:30. We’ll send a few racers around the course with the young ones to make sure everyone returns to the finish line safely!

Additional Information

A criterium is a laps race on a closed course. We’d like to close a handful of roads in the neighbourhood to create a circuit approximately one kilometre in length. This road closure would begin at 09:00 and will end (reopening) before 17:00 (5pm).

The type of race is very fast and exciting. It will consist of seven races throughout the day; one for each ability category.

Map Of Affected Area

Below is a Google Map that race organizers use for planning and communicating the event’s road closures and access points. Please open the legend by clicking the slider icon in the top left corner of the map’s title bar; you can click to enable some of the map layers that describe our plans. You can also view the map at Google Maps by following this link.

Course Control And Resident Access

Roads, alleyways, and some driveways will be closed off with barricades, traffic cones, and race tape. Experienced volunteer marshals wearing reflective vests will be positioned around the race circuit assisting residents and spectators in accessing the events roadways and paths.

Pedestrians and guests will have no trouble navigating the course among the road closures and cyclists. We just ask that pedestrians and guests pay attention to the marshals and exercise caution when crossing the race route.

Laurier Heights Community League will be hosting a BBQ from 11:30 - 13:00 (approximately). Bring cash!

Motorists will be able to enter/exit the residences inside the course once the race pack goes by. At that time we’ll ask motorists to slip onto the course in the same direction as the race and use caution when making it to their destination. Our volunteers will communicate with motorists using laminated maps of the area. We will also be stressing that motorists not park on the race course.

An ambulance and paramedics will be on site to respond to any emergencies. We plan to use the green space in the south-east end of the race course as the start/finish area. Team tents will be propped up in the green-space and will be used by athletes during their warm up.

We will be bringing several garbage bins to collect refuse from riders and guests. Our commitment is to leave the area as clean and tidy as we found it.
