The Alex Stieda Classic Road Race

Overview

The Category 1/2 race will begin at 11:00 on Saturday morning. Remaining race categories will push off at staggered intervals. This race is comprised of multiple laps of a 31km course. Be warned that the first race lap will only be 26km in length as a result of the roll-out from Graminia Hall and the finish line being on Sanctuary Road south.

Field limits will be in place - no more than 60 riders per category

Prizing and podiums will commence as soon as we receive the results from the Commissaire's table at the finish line. We expect to have 2 podium presentations – one for Youth, W4, Citizen, Cat 4 at approximately 1200 hr, and a final presentation for M3, W123 and M12 at approximately 1300 hrs.  .

Prizes payouts will be determined after registration closes

Parking

Rider and volunteer parking will be available behind the hall. Caravan vehicles will park in the Graminia Hall lot in front of the hall.

Race Headquarter - Graminia Hall

Headquarters for the event will be Gramina Hall. Washrooms are available inside, with outhouses near the parking area.

Race Package Pickup

Race package pickup & sign-on will open at 09:30 inside Graminia Hall

Race Timing Chip

The race timing chip will be securely attached to your cycle. Chips are not to be placed on the rider's body. At the conclusion of your race return to the ABA tent to return your numbered chip to the chip curtain. Secure your chip & strap to its correct numbered location in the curtain. Participants who lose their chip, or fail to return the timing chip, will be invoiced $75 by the ABA for the replacement cost.

If you are racing the Sunday Criterium, DO NOT RETURN YOUR TIMING CHIP UNTIL THE CONCLUSION OF YOUR RACE ON SUNDAY.

Number Placement

Two jersey numbers and a frame plate.

Number placement on the jersey is on the right shoulder and lower back.

Vehicles

No team or unauthorized following vehicles are permitted in the road race.

Commissaire Vehicles

There will be a Commissaire vehicle with race radio following each category of the race.

Wheel Vehicles

Wheels added to the wheel vehicle are neutral. That means another rider might borrow your wheel. Best to indicate category, bib number, and type of cassette (gears, Shimano/campy).

Drop your spare wheels off in the respective ability level’s wheel car. The wheel cars will be parked just outside Graminia Hall and can be loaded up to five minutes before your race starts.

Wheel cars will return to the hall parking lot once your race has completed. Please remember to collect your wheels!

First Aid & Emergency Services

An ambulance and several paramedics will be on the course. The nearest hospital is the Devon General Hospital.

Feed Zone

We will be following UCI feed zone regulations: “Feeding is prohibited on climbs, descents and during the first 30 and last 20 km”.

The feed zone has been placed on Sanctuary Road (RR-264) 800 metres south of the finish line. The feed zone is approximately 200m in length and it will be marked with the green feed zone flags. Refer to the distance table above for your categories feed laps.

Instructions To Feeders & Team Support

Feeders must keep vehicles completely off the road surface, including the shoulder. Race organizers and local residents will not tolerate any litter or waste left behind.

Instructions To Racers

Bottles and trash are only to be discarded in the feed zones. Failure to abide will result in fines.

There is a sprint section located on Range Road 265. On your races final lap, the fastest rider in the 300m sprint section will be awarded the $25 prime. To be clear, this is not the first rider to cross the sprint finish, it is the fastest rider in the 300m section (…just like Zwift). We suggest that you familiarize yourself with the sprint location either on the map or by paying attention on your initial lap(s).

Finish Line

The finish line is a false flat approximately 300m south of TWP-512A on Sanctuary Road (RR-264).

The finishing sprint must not cross the imaginary centre line. You will run the risk of being relegated or disqualified should you violate the centre line rule.

At the conclusion of your race, proceed with extreme care when returning to Graminia Hall as a race may still be going on behind you.

Podium presentations will be held once we receive the results from the Commissaire table at the finish line. Please be patient with us as this is sorted out.

Prizing

The organizers expect to run the event as cost neutral. Therefore, prizing will not be known until the registration numbers of final.

This Criterium route is approximately a kilometer long, and will be run as a points race, with overall omnium points at stake. The Citizens category event will open the day's races with a scratch race format (first across the line wins). Race Details

  • This race will be run in the counter-clockwise direction.

  • A motorcycle will be leading the race out to keep the course clear and safe for spectators and racers.

Points Race Format

  • The 2024 Stieda Classic is a 2 event omnium. You must start each event to be eligible for omnium placing.

  • Omnium points will be awarded every 4 laps.

  • 5, 3, 2 & 1 points to the 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th place rider across the line.

  • DOUBLE POINTS WILL BE AWARDED ON FINAL SPRINT (10, 6, 4, & 2).

  • The bell will be rung at the beginning of each sprint/point lap.

  • The same bell will be used to signify the final lap. Keep your eye on the lap board.

  • Riders that lap the field will be awarded 20 omnium points

  • Riders that get lapped by the field will lose 20 omnium points (or be pulled)

  • Criterium points race regulations from the UCI are on page 61

  • In the case of a crash or mechanical difficulty you must report to the commissaire in the wheel pit. Do not return to the wheel pit against the grain of the race.

  • No free laps will be given for mechanical incidents that occur in the last 3 laps of the race.

Parking

Park in the green zones marked in the Google Map. Avoid upsetting residents by parking in front of their driveways or houses. The City of Edmonton has stipulated that parking vehicles in the River Valley Capitol Hill field is not permitted. Motorists must park on a road

Parking inside the course is at a premium and you may be denied access depending on the time of day and the pace of the races.

Team Tents

Tents should be setup in the yellow zone marked on the map. Do not setup tents on 139 Street or on the sidewalks. Emergency services will be using this area and must not be blocked in any way.

Race Package Pickup

Race package pickup & sign-on will open at 09:00 at the ABA tent. Most riders will have already picked up their packages on Saturday. We do not expect a long queue.

A $10 fee will be charged for replacement numbers (bring cash).

Failure to sign the startup will result in fines.

Race Timing Chip

The race timing chip will be securely attached to your cycle. Chips are not to be placed on the rider's body. At the conclusion of your race return to the ABA tent to return your numbered chip to the chip curtain. Secure your chip & strap to its correct numbered location in the curtain. Participants who lose their chip, or fail to return the timing chip, will be invoiced $75 by the ABA for the replacement cost.

If you fail to return your Race Timing Chip strap by the end of the weekend, you will be charged $75 to fund the replacement.

Wheel Pit

The wheel pit is located west of the finish area. It is a rider’s responsibility to supply their own wheels identified with a race number. We will have a marshal in the pit making sure that wheels are checked in/out accordingly. Remember that wheels are NOT neutral, you must only take a wheel with your race number on it.

Do not forget to grab your wheels at the end of the race.

Food and Refreshments

Laurier Height Community League will be hosting a BBQ (11:00-13:00 approximately). Bring cash!

End Of Race Celebrations

Please be patient while officials and organizers tally the points to determine race winners. Note that Zone 4 will have the finish order only. Criterium points and omnium points will need to be tablulated.

You must physically sign the startup sheet before you are considered eligible to race. Your Vaccine QR Code will be scanned at sign on so bring it with you. Sign on for your race will close five to ten minutes before your race.

Parking

Parking will be available at 07:00. Do not enter the parking paddock before 07:00.

Your vaccination QR code will be scanned as you enter the parking paddock (see map). We ask that everyone in your vehicle that is older than 12 be prepared to share their QR code as you pull up to the paddock gate. Scanning will begin at 07:00 and will take only a few seconds of your time. Please remain patient as you wait in the vehicle queue.

Anyone whose QR code cannot be verified will be asked to leave the grounds. Riders that cannot verify will not race. No exceptions.

Graminia Hall

Unfortunately, the Graminia Hall has been double-booked for the weekend. There will be a garage sale setup closer to the hall structure, please be courteous and mind your manners while walking or riding through this area.

Race Package Pickup

Race package pickup & sign-on will open at 08:00 inside the parking paddock at the ABA tent. Get your package as early as possible.

Consider picking up your race package on Friday.
